'89 Facelift.
My ECU fried and I ended up getting an E38A computer, and the 510cc injectors to match. But it's running rich as now. Idles fine, runs fine, lots of kick and everything, but blows a heap of black smoke under full throttle and leaves black soot all over the rear of the car. It's also doing no more than 260km to a tank, which is costing me around $50-$60; and that's just regular driving, not giving it much at all. What are my options here? I'd love to find a regular computer and put my old injectors back in, but short of that what are my options? Running on BP98.

maybe if you wanted too go down the road of aftermarket computer could be a good idea if you plan for high horsepower

other then that try and source that right ecu

is it definetly a e38a ecu and not something different or is it unsure and someone said it was a e38a computer

Are you sure the ecu is mapped for 510cc injectors? if yes
did you get the matching AFM as well?

yer i was thinking the same thing because i thought e38a were like 480cc or something around that

but its a good point i thought all galants used the same airflow meter

e38a is RS, hence it would be 510cc injectors..
i have an 808 ecu spare but not keen on selling it sorry

pre-facelift E38A rs vr4's still had 450's and 14b turbo's.
post-facelift E38A rs vr4's were available in both regular (450's, 14b turbo) and "evolution" (510's, 16G turbo) versions.

I'd try it with the 450's. (you can watch for knock if you have a datalogger - which you should because they are cheap (well under $100 for a palm + software is free) and very useful.

I was thinking that.

A friends RS E38A had a 14b/3bolt/450cc and no bonnet vents.

Are the E38A facelift models available?
I have never seen one before.

I have only seen in person montecarlo's which had the 510cc / 4bolts etc.

Do as squid says, chuck the 450's back in and see how you go.

agreed the onyl way you would know what injectors the computer was designed to run is probally the model code on the side of the ECU

I've only seen one facelift non-Evo RS in person, many years ago.

but http://www.vr4.co.nz/rsvr4.html - original japanese sales brochure.

and yea, my mates Monte Carlo has all the evolution spec stuff too.

if the car is running rich, would i be right to assume that its burning too much fuel, hence the air/fuel ratio is out.. right?
therefore is he has upgraded the ECU and injectors, but not the AFM.. wouldnt it be the AFM that is throwing the A/F ratio out?

yep, and those early ones were still running dual board ecu's,
while all the later ones with 510s and 16g turbos
were using single board ecu's.

i have tried one of the early ones on my car in the past,
i did couple of dyno runs and AFR was just a flat line
on 10:1...it was probably richer then that as the sensor
doesnt read anything below 10:1. I still had 450s in there
just not a correct AFM (just a regular one that comes in jspec vr4s).

so, as i said earlier, if you are sure that your ecu is mapped
for 510cc injectors (should be single board ecu), then look
for the matching AFM, as they are not all the same..:)

I've got the logger with MMCd. Not much use though, I actually got the 510s after I'd used the E38A ECU for a while with the 450s. Ran lean, stalled, etc.

EVO-00X - not sure about the sensor, never had a problem before I changed all this.

So we're pretty sure it's the AFM then? Some conflicting opinions here.

Cheers for the replies too guys.

Was the facelift E38A or E39A?

The monte's are still E39A...

E38A has no 4ws - RS's both regular and evo (wind up windows, no sound deadening, etc)

E39A has 4ws, for both evo and regular vr4's (full electrics, etc) and, as you say, monte carlo's

the above is true for both pre and post facelift cars.

oo2 sensors should be replaced every 100 000kms stated by every manufacturer

it is possible for an o2sensor too give up a ghost in an instant

check the numbers on top of the airflow meter might possibly be wrong
