Tappets! tick tick tick

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

hey mate put in Nulon Performance additive. i had the same problem, was running castrol rs, put that in and about 700kms the noise was gone. last change i put in motul 4100 turbolite and that quietened them down heaps but i still added the additive to elimate the noise. i just bought the bottle from repco wasnt too much.took bout 400-500 kms and the sound was gone.

im with Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 and feels super, i do still have a lifter 'tick tick' coming from 2 lifters that get stuck so what i did is try (Nulon High Performance) Treatmant at new oil change (i think 300-500ml a bottle) and there u go tick tick is gone say for about 800-900kms, then it came back so i then brought the second bottle put it in and now its been over 1000kms and i do get cold start quiet ticking in 1min its gone and wont come back. Oh btw want to spend more for your bucks, try FUCHS TITANS 5w-30 darren from AFAS recommended it. I tried it in my car no tickin whatsoever car drives fine punches hard. but tickin eventually came back but just audible came and went sometimes without any use of Nulon at all. (g-luck)

the ticking can be caused by blocked (HLA, Hydrolic Lash Adjusters) aka Lifters / Tappets

the 1g lifters are very restrictive, they have a tiny hole and usually get clogged up...

so if your oil is dirty, it will clog up and tick

the 2g lifters / 3g lifters will fix it..
otherwise, flushing will also help

i've got chronic lifter tap with my vr4, i'm using 2g lifters, im assuming they are faulty or just dirty..

i've tried 20-40, 15-30, 30 mono..

the 30 mono was for running in, constant lifter tick
the 15-30 semi was decent, still had lifter tick though
20-40 mineral ($10.00 oil) is currently in the car.. less tick, alot quiter!

i've been playin around with oils and flushes and the best method so far wasn't the "LIFTER TICK NULON BOTTLE", that thing didn't do anything..

"ENGINE FLUSH" didn't do anything either (15 mins at idle then drain and change oil....

the best results came from flushing the motor with 4Litres of engine oil and 500ml of ATF (auto tranny fluid)

i let the car idle for 10 minutes and the drained it...

you could pretty much hear the tick go away during the flush...

give it a shot!..

dont drive with the ATF in the motor though, i've heard different stories about how to do it but i believe that it could be quite harsh with rubber seals as they have alot of detergents etc in it...

i got your word. hmm i believe my gsr has the 1g (i.e factory). And nulon h.p.t not the other nulon tick free treatment worked. Now and then after i start up engine from cold. It ticks quietly then goes away in 1 min and now its been over 1000+kms ticking wont come back. And also with the engine flush i hear its good to use every oil change. cos clears out all the carbon, grime, particles from the system. And hence better idle, free revving. I got this feedback from my friend with an liberty rs that has done 250000kms+. I got 900kms for oil change i'll use engine flush formula and see how the ticking goes.

yeah i'm currently using 4100 but i might try a diff oil next oil change after i get my car back from panel beaters.. might actually take it to afas to get a full service..

It's more a sign of lifters going bad. You can put whatever oil you want in there (I'd recommend going with what the manufacturer suggests as the engineers that designed the motor know a lil' more about it than most) but the underlying problem isn't the brand of oil you're using, it's the bad lifters.

I personally ran Mobil1 10w30 for the longest with no problems and when the lifters began to tick (I think they had about 138,XXX miles on em) I simply replaced the set with the revised model and that solved it. I've also heard you can "clean" them out by soaking the set in engine degreaser or brake parts cleaner overnite and such but have never tried it myself. You also might want to look here for some answers. Cheers.

i've also heard tales of people changing there lifters only for them to come back.. who knows what's going on :D

Did you change your mind on this idea Baz? :D
You seemed dead set against it over on the u.s board 8)

Seriously though, all of these "fixes" are temporary only. The best way to fix it is a new set of 3g lifters.

when your desperate you'll give anything a shot....

it was the quickest solution!

but the lifters are still making noise, so im thinking its not the lifters..
ill find out tommorrow what it is..

gonna pull em out, clean them and inspect the rockers and valves at the same time....

hopefully its nothing major

did nothing mate!

okay, update on my car..
had the lifters pulled out and they are pretty much crap...
i think ill be getting rid of the 2g lifters and putting in some 1g lifters...
they are too short and seem to have uneven tension..

what a waste of cash..
i bought these things 2 years ago also.. and the place isn't online anymore!!

probably a bad batch..
anyway, no need for 3g lifters.. ill try some 1g cleaned lifters and see how i go..

just chuck them on ebay

"sold as is"

Dont waste your time cleaning the 1st gen lifters, the time it takes to remove, clean and replace them, only to have them ticking again wiyhin 500km is just not worth it. If they are out, bin them and put in 3G'S. mine were fine until i switched to mobil 1, within 5000km the ticking noise was there for 3-5min after startup and has stayed the same. 2 bottles of nulon lifter free over 2 oil changes did nothing. i plan on installing a set of 3rd gen lifters but other than kempys in NZ have been unable to source them local. I work at a mitsu dealer and genuine items are @ $50 each at cost price, times 16 lifters and its an expensive exercise. now running fmx15/40 oil, pretty reasonable semi synth, given 4g's will burn a bit.
