Hey guys,

woah been a while since i been on here!

Anyhow its coming up to service time for my car, and i want to quieten those fking tappets as much as possbile. Most ppl i have chatted to seem to think that i should go with mobil 1, except i am told that the 5w will not quieten my tappets as much as the 15w. regardless, i am going to put a bottle of nulon in there to help it.

but i am just curious which oil to use, also which weight?

Sorry i run a 4g93T

Cheers

-Doug

i dont know if this will help but...

i use castrol gtx 3 (15-40)
before the last service i used motul 4100 power (15-50)
others recommend motul 4100 turbolite (10-40 i think)

yup turbolite is the way to go.. i still get tappets but they are no where as loud as before!

is this the 10w40 turbo light?

and is there anything against using a 15w50 or is that too thick? espeically living in canberra where it can get cold?

cheers fellas

I use penrite 15W60 in my 4g63 gsr, no probs. Slight ticking when it gets to around 5000K which is good as it reminds me to do oil change....

mmm i dont think theres anything wrong with 15-50.... but then i reliased if my cars been running gtx3 its whole life.. i might as well stick to it. In the mitsubishi manual they recommend the range... i cant remember, i can check later. I haven't noticed the difference in ticking with motul or gtx3 so yea, seem about the same.

The castrol oil seems to get black when you get to 5000kms whereas the motul was still pretty clear/not as black but im not really sure if its going to make a difference? My mechanic prefers valvoline.

well i got myself some Fuch's 'performance oil' 15w40, spose we will see how it goes. it says it is compatible with turbo applications etc. I also got some Tappet quietening fluid to put in there as well.

same here...... used to use penrite 10w-50 semi synthetic, and sometime castrol R 10w 40

but after taking my car to AFAS they have been putting Magnatec in it and its never sounded smoother.....

Correct me if im wrong but i thought fully synthetic was best, just expensive. I am using magnatec at the moment but only because it was the only thing i could get my hands on.

i've used mobil 1, penrite hpr10, 4100turbolite, the ones at genuine mitsubishi oil, and magnetec.

im with magnetec for the pass 20-30thou k's, and hasn't missed a beat.

i hated mobil1 (lifters were going off its nuts) and the mitsibishi one (lasted less then 2 hrs in my car).

isn't the slight ticking a sign of low oil?...well for me it is anyways lol

Used to use penrite.

Penrite will SILENCE your lifters at 15W-50 but it only lasts about 4000km before you gotta change it (but it's cheap).

I use fuchs now... running 5W-something and I haven't heard the lifters in my vr4 since. 5000km changes of oil AND filter. My filters always full of gunk :(

"isn't the slight ticking a sign of low oil?...well for me it is anyways lol"

No havent noticed low oil when they start ticking. And its only for a few seconds then all gone again after car reaches temp. I'll check it next time out of curiosity....

Valvoline XLD Premium 20W/50 - thicker oil for hotter climate up here in Townsville. And besides whats the point of spending $50 a change on oil when you do it every 3000kms

It depends where you live, but I hardly believe a 10-15 year old motor, designed 20 years ago is going to need anything thinner than 20w50. You run the risk of not enough oil pressure and oil starvation pretty badly, not to mention it burns easier, is more expencive, drains from parts much quicker and degrades faster.

A quality 20w50 (SuperHP, Penrite, XLD Premium) is ideal, because at the price of it, you can change your oil every 5000 no worries.

PS: Mitsu service centre gets 20w50 oil for all there cars, and changes it every 10-15 thousand KM depending on the motor. So a quality oil changed more frequently is already overkill.

turbo'd 4Gs are supposed to be serviced every 5000ks

20w ends up being too thick ..... the lubrication points in 4G93's lifters (for example) are very small, so if you start of with a thicker oil, once it becomes gooped up after a few hundred k's, the lifters become noisy as......

i was initially using HPR5 penrite (5w40), which was too thin, but had the best luck with castrol R 10w40, and also this time round Magnatec.....
