The launch is mightier than the clutch

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

I was thinking of getting a heaveir duty clutch but decided to keep the clutch the weakest part of the driveline. But after doing this one i think i would rather replace a drive shaft. The gearbox dosent seem to wanna line up properly and its giving me the shits.

In my peak (when i did alot of clutch replacements) i could remove/refit and install a gearbox/clutch in under 4hrs! on the ground too.

Im with you dude, by myself with the car only on jack stands is a mission and a half . I started on thursday and work on it every arvo after work. only just got the gearbox back on thhis arvo and still gotta do driveline and linkage shit. I got a mate and 3zercrowd to give me a hand lining the gearbox up (pretty hard by myself.

What you really need is a couple of mates, two holding the gearbox from the top of the car, and another (brave) person lying underneath the car who aligns the gearbox as the other two support the weight.

An engine crane can come in handy here, even still with the gearbox on its still a good 4-5hr job for me to bolt everything back. Sure it was my first crack at it but I guess with practice it can be brought down as you know which bolts go where, which socket/spanner is needed for such and such a task.

I spent soo much time looking for the right tool to save me time, that if I had of used what I had in my hand it would have been done in no time

I do like how everything goes back together properly on the GSR, compared to say a Fiat were bits and pieces never go back on the way they came off!!

Yerp i did it by myself..

What i did was remove the box myself.. without using anything but a jack to grab the box and lower it when i free'd it.

Then when i went to realign it i used my engine crane to hook up to the gearbox then lifted it just abit lower then the motor and giggled it in.

I did my evo clutch change about 4 months ago and they are much harder then the VR4 cos u remove all engine mounts bar the passengers side so you need something to support the motor.

Took me about 6hrs to do the evo one.

Jon

First of all, the GSR mounts are all on the gearbox so you need something to hold the motor (3zercrowds engine crane was being borrowed at the time) so i used a jack and a block of wood to support the motor.
Had another two jacks under the box to keep it level when removing and replacing the box.

JSYLE's right, you can change a clutch in 4 hours on your own and if you know what to do and have a set routine in how you approach and do it :) (it pays to have a few notches in your belt  )

I could have done it in 4 hrs easily with a car hoist and tranny jack. Without well good luck if you can do it like that in 4 hrs by yourself my hats off to you.

Hmmm.....5 puck brassy.
Wouldn't have a clue on the PP weight, though wasn't bad at all on the foot.
EVO-00X has driven that clutch also.
Making ~160awkw and ran 12.7.
Launched alot without probs from 5-6k rpm.

And driven daily for 18months.

Pretty much a perfect combo for me anyhow, shame I don't have a clue what it was.

Any hoo, the new clutch is very responsive. I think it should bring his 60ft times from 1.88 to 1.80 (judging by feel anyway).

(Bloody Dave log on as YOU next time  )--Dane

well i took the car down the strip and not happy, there was like a slight dew forming on the track(at least i thought so anyway) i couldnt get traction for all of 1st gear and most of 2nd. I thought it would get better throughout the night but it didnt.

And the car comes to a grinding holt again.......
Launched it a set of lights yesterday and herd something go clunk. now the car starts vibrating over 30k's and screeches the wheels as well as wobbly steering. Guess its time to throw the car back on the stands abd take another look

yeah righteo rick, well see how yours runs when you get back, all that old fuel, lol let me know when you are getting rid of all the injectors and shit off the evo

old fuel

thats why i only left a about 2L in it, enough to get me to the servo, so im not wasting any, ill just limp it there other wise she'll ping her head off, and i donty want another rebuild.

as for the injectors and turbo and manifold plus all the other good stuff, ill let u fight dane, josh and jeromy for them..

im just going to put a price on it and who ever comes up with the money well.....

hows the car going anyway? ( if at all) sorry just had to add that.

And Josh way down in Brisbane pisses him self laughing    , seams the Gsr is no better than the Magna of Doom. So lets add this up turbo, clutch, diff, AC hmmmm wonder what will go next
