Allright guys,
so I was driving home the other night, responsibly, not doing anything outrageous.
Anyway, all of a sudden i hear a bit of a rattle, then hear something fall, then check my rear vision mirror and i saw something bouncing on the road.
Pulled over straight away, went to inspect the situation, and i found this bolt,
I've got no idea where it might have came from, but if anyone can shed some light on the situation it would be great.
I've still been able to drive the car, it doesnt seem like theres anything different about the way it drives.
FFS, who the hell loses a bolt?!?!

What size bolt head is it Dean? Photo is quite misleading in that it could be a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, or ???
If it is about a 12mm it could be from one of your Exhaust mounts

Run your eye over all your suspension and crossmember mounts Dean.

That's a strange one indeed! That spacer doesn't look like it leaves much thread to engage into whatever it bolts into. I can't recall using a bolt on my car with a spacer and washer like that.

When u said there was a rattle, does that rattle continue? u might of ran over a bolt that was already on the road, but by looking at it i wouldnt have a clue where it would come from if it was from your car.

The end threads are damaged, and even looks a bit bent, whatever it was doing, it has vibrated loose...i got no idea why the main washer is bent in the opposite direction to the applied locking force, is that the way it came off?

It has a spring washer too to lock it, the centre spacer is likely to space it and stop it locking up when its tightened, ie. its designed to tighten up on the spacer and not crush what its holding.
Have a look a look around the floorpan of the car, the cradle mounts, the diff mounts and the diff itself + all the suspension/swaybars. It has some corrosion on it, so its come from under the car...if its even off your car..

Explain the rattling, like where etc.....

there is no rattling at the moment, the rattle was only for a brief second then the bolt came flying off.
Rich - its a 17mm head on the bolt, the bolts approx 70mm long,
i have to jack it up and see where it may have came from.
positive that it came off my car.
i think thats more of a bushing sorta piece which leads me to think suspension component.

the north south crossmember bolt i reckon,

there should be two at the front and two at thee back where it bolts to the main crossmember

That would be your front crossmember bolt, have a look under the front of ur car and the crossmember where it bolts to the bottom of your radiator support, there are 2 rubbers and should be 2 bolts

If not the front ones, look to the rear of the crossmember there are another 2 rubbers and bolts, but i think the rear ones are longer

Also check the bolts on your hangers bearings.
the thread pitch on the bolt looks like metric fine, so should be for mounting something.

thanks guys.
yor input is much appreciated.
ill get into it today and confirm your theories ;)
what would i do without ya's!

because i got ppl to do and things to see.... lol
i just had a look under there, the crossmember is where my lower engine mount is welded onto right? and the 2 bolts in question are directly visible from under the car?? if so, both those bolts are still there.... problem still unresolved :(

been here and looked yet?

i think ill get it put on the hoist.
its too hard checkin it out myself especially while its so low.
but thanks for the input.

u could use this thing called a jack :p

Hope you find it man, maybe it wasnt from ur car, maybe it was just on the road and u ran over it

Does that washer come off the bolt?
Does that sleeve come off the bolt? or is it threaded?

I can only think of
Front or Rear Gearbox bolt. apart from the washer.

But I dont really know all the bolts on an evo..
different story on the VR4 though..

It also looks like the start of the bolt has some stuff threads...

Tricky one!
