Who is a member of Built not bought motorsport?

There has been a bit of friendly discussion out there lately about building your own car D.I.Y in your shed or in a workshop, or a mixture of both and the cars running great times on the strip and track.

Who out there is a member of what we like to call "Built not bought motorsport"?

Do you think there is any advantages of any one way or a combo of both?

We would like to hear of any D.I.Y. success stories you may have.

I used to be 50/50. Now i've lost faith in mechanics.

i dont:
weld
tune
paint
machine

i do:
prep metal work
prep body work
install ecu's / base map install etc
assemble mechanical components etc

advantages, do what you can do, leave the stuff you cant for the experts!
best of both worlds...

Tune
Assemble mechanical components / build engine
Calculations on whats needed and what will work / Research
Weld some componennts (Get help on others)

i have done all the work on my own car except for the roll cage.

bought it as a nice standard evo 2 gsr....now its in bits

i do as much as i can do at home this can be anything from

engine conversion 1j into my cressida
wiring
coilovers and other bolt on crap

and at home also built custom shit with help from dad like lift kit for his 4wd and other shit

would love to learn how to do the clutch in my car but being 1st 4wd like this i have no clue HAHA i would save alot of money if i did

I didn't really know much about my car or cars in general when I first bought it but slowly as I go along I am learning.I never pretend to know more than I do or portray it.If I have a problem I ask Jeff @ Techsport or afterhours or for opinions I head to the net.Just because some of us have the time to work on our cars doesnt make us better than the person who takes it to a workshop.
I wanted a Mitsubishi Evo from the very first time I wanted a car but couldnt afford it so I bought a Mitsubishi coupe until I could.I bought a TME because I loved the look,power and rareness.I always made time for a fellow MITSUBISHI enthusiast whether or not it was "built or bought."
So many ex Subaru,Nissan,Honda wanks upgrading to the almighty mitsubishi are infecting our community with bullshit and causing infighting.
The only right way of owning a Mitsubishi is with a smile,the only right way of being a great community is by sharing that smile with eachother.
If you get corrected or dare I say it disciplined in this or any other Mitsubishi community take it on the chin as you were in the wrong!
I find myself losing interest in this forum lately and the attitudes on here seem to be spiraling down to dare I say it Subaru levels and my comments above seem to be the reason I think why.The mods should spend more time worrying about members of this forum ripping other members off more than the attitudes of forum mods on their own forum
I think it now rests solely on the Mods shoulders to clean this shit up because it isnt any good for us and it is not MITSUBISHI!

I agree with you EVOLUTIONTOM...

I have seen it too many times, people selling the stock Mitsubishi Lancer MLS head gasket for a SOHC CE Lancer, as a performance head gasket at twice the price of Mitsubishi Retail...
Forums (all forums not just this one) are meant to help out other people with the same interests.
I do still find that there are a lot of people on forums that should use the search function before posting, however at the end of the day forums are meant to help people out, no pick shit at them or make money from them..

This is mainly the reason i read forums, but dont really post, as if i need help, more often then not ill find it by google or other forums, rather then putting a post up and having people try and sell me stuff.

i know how tom feels i spent a good 6 years saving for my evo mind you i did 1jz a cressida for some stupid reason witch i should not have would have got my evo sooner

but everyday i drive with a smile and im happy

but there is a diff i belive in meanings like some people buy there car stock and go into the money pit buying all there mods and so on for example

im getting a 2.2L stroker and a gt3040 but yet there is no way i would be able to put the engine together so i will get it done by some one but other bolt ons like sway bars strut bars cams i will prob do my self

The only parts I don't do, due to lack of equipment, is engine machining, retrimming and tuning. Everything else, wiring, assembly, fabrication, painting etc etc.. I do myself.

my CE Coupe i did pretty much everything minus welding of the manifold/cooler pipes, tuning, and spraying of the body, having said that i did prep the body and i painted the engine bay.

on my evo every mod i have done so far has been done with my own 2 hands. and i think thats the best way.

i have learned so much from owning these 2 cars and with the evo im even more willing to go further with what i do myself coz seen as its a weekend car it doesnt matter if its not put togather in time for work monday morning!

I've done:
* AWD conversion (everything except the welding and tailshaft shortening and balancing) on my own
* Entire 2.3 stroker engine build (except for head machining, boring and balancing) and installation with guidance from Andrew Vibert at CVAP as it was the first (and currently only) engine I had ever done.
* Re-wiring of car to EVO spec as part of engine and ECU upgrade
* Usual bolt on "mods" like strut bars, brake booster support, aluminium radiator etc.

I'm just limited by time (lack of - as consumed by work, 2x dogs, house and preference to spend time with girlfriend) and money (BIG lack of - as consumed by house, 2x dogs and mortage).

why not try and learn?
no point in driving a performance car if you dont know whats under the hood etc.
thats why rich poofs shit me off in their porches and ferrari's because they no it goes quick but wouldn't have the first clue why..
im young and still learning.. get my dad to help aswell..

I have had so many dramas with mechanics that I tend to do as much as I can myself these days. I would still call myself 50/50 because even though I do a lot myself, there are some things that require a bit more expertise than I can muster. If I could find some reliable staff and the girlfriend leaves me alone for long enough, I might even finish it this year..

You guys are inspiring me, I have had a boost controller that has been sitting on my desk for about 3 months now becuase I have been too much of a wuss to play with it. The sad thing is I have more than one car so I am in an excellent position to self modify.
