Anything that I'm not confident in doing myself or is just a plain pain in the arse job, I get my mate who is a mechanic to do it, other than the wiring, engine rebuild and tuning, I have swapped everything over from another car myself

I had minimal mitsu knowladge when I first joined, I admit that I have made many mistakes along the way, but i guess that's life. From not knowing how to change the gearbox oil to doing two engine swaps, I think that's a success story

But It seems like I'm always learning.

the thing is, what you learn by doing things yourself can be applied to just about anything mechanical.

I do all the grease monkey stuff and preperation for the drags and my mechanic does the tuning/development on it.

Yeah, but your car is a freak.

I love your work, RESPECT!!
I made the Castrol rep give me a few extra posters to hang up at my work

I honestly don't see the big problem in getting everything done in a workshop. I for one am not that mechanically minded. I can change oils and pads and thats about it.

Although I do know how the car works, in theory I could plug in a new cooler or slap on a new turbo but I just don't feel 100% confident in doing a task that if done wrong will cause insane amounts of damage. Of course you could argue the other side which is putting all your faith in a mechanic which may or may not be the best thing.

I think the main reason people that get work done in the workshops get talked down is that they don't know what work is being done to an extent. Maybe they are getting a bigger turbo put in, but do they know how the bigger turbo is giving them more hp? Do they know the drawbacks (eg. more lag) All they may know is, Bigger turbo = Bigger power.

Where as if you're a more hands on and like to work a lot on your car, you will have more knowledge on the parts that work the car.

I also tend to notice that owner's that have had there car "bought" tend to be more branded. It seems if it isn't HKS or Apexi it's shit. I'm not saying branded items are crap, it's just some people just can't get there head around that you can get just as good or even better items for half of the price of some of them even if there name isn't as famous or popular as GReddy.

That's my 2 cents. Now back to the garage to put on my MoTeC exhaust.

My time doesn't cost me money.
I prefer to get angry at myself for stuffing something up and then learning by it, than getting angry at myself for paying someone else to stuff it up.
I don't care if I spend 8 hours making a bracket to bolt the downpipe to the block (cause the exhaust guy reckoned it didn't do anything so didn't put it on the new exhaust), I don't have overheads, or a business to run, or other whinging customers to please or wages and creditors to pay.

Basically, I could never afford to pay someone to be as thorough as I can be if I do it myself, even if I have to learn how to do it on the way. And that'
s all part of the 4G journey. :D

Alot of the work done to my car was built by myself and my older brother EVO00X...

Only things that havnt been done by us are the piping and paint

I'm like Dave, there are some things i'm happy to do, but others i've been known to fuck up (they don't call me a CLuTZ for nothing)

I'm happy to look after my cars, but when it comes to a $10k motor in a 9 second car, i'd prefer to get someone with knowledge and experience to do it for me so there's less chance of disaster.
