Howdy fellas an fillys,
Right, ive got a few ideas about what im gunna do but i wanna se if theres any better ideas/ opinions out there,
im at the stage where the gsr is abit tired, an she needs some tlc,
so i got 2 choices, a 93 or a 63, i love the 93 but figure the 2L is better, obvious reasons
therefore im gunna drop forged rods in the 63 an go that route, i think, (yes boring, done, an probly overdone) but i wanna stick with std slugs as it will be a daily driver, so any ideas on what evo has a piston good for 350hp, probly all but lighter the better, anyone shaved the insides to lighten them up??
cos realistically, i think that will be enough power for a daily work driver, i know 9's are good but people probly want too much for em,
any pointers or ideas, numbers on what ya pushin thru std pistons
an if ya got some slugs out of an evo 5 or onwards let me know if ya wanna flick em off
CHEERS!!!!!!

pretty sure a 3 is good to about 450ish so anything newer then that would suffice.

sweet cheers EVO300, im curious about the weights an stuff too now... actually, i cant over think this considering im not spendin much, but i kinda wanna make it reliable,

cheers George, hoping that I beams will be sweet try keep rot. mass an all that low with the parts i already got, probly should of mentioned that in the 1st post but you'd think even they'll hold at least 350-400hp??

oh duuhh was half asleep i meant 450 -500hp on the rods

read this, if you have vr4 engine read about 1g, if evo 1-3 read about 2g.
http://www.dsmtuners.com/tech.html

ask any questions after you have read it.
the upgrade paths are in the 'basic HP upgrades' link

i think most here will agree with what is said there

ummm no offence dude but, no shit,
im actually after what power people have put through there std evo pistons, an what sort of weight differences there are ;)

and ask any questions after ive read it haha what are you a mod??  its those sort of comments that make noob's not wanna talk, an guess what the forum seems alot quieter since i was on last, an to be honest im pretty sure thats what the forums for, to share ideas in a place where some of the most onto it 4g minds are?? rather than spending hours trolling through posts that dont have alot of relevance cos they always go off topic ask around an share the knowledge, ya know,

an i know ya probly havnt seen me on here an thats why ya might think im a noob but dude, i can assure you, it aint my 1st rodeo

If it's a daily, why not maintain std rods and pistons and just keep the boost to a safe level. Most cost efficient option.

What sort of budget would a stock rebuild like this chew up, im 'almost' thinking of pulling the reins back on my rebuild, similar to the OP, i have another motor sitting there and im thinking of giving it a freshen up rather than going a forged stroker, but id like to pull it down for a look and go late model evo pistons at least and all arp's.

Thinking similar to this build;
vr4 rods.
2nd hand late model evo pistons
all arp bolts
acl race bearings
new oem oil pump
oem timing belt tensioner
Gates timing belt kit
remove balance shafts
felpro, cometic or mitsi headgasket

Thing is i want to get to trapping 120mph in my heavy vr4 on pump not e85, and then limiter bash it every day on the street.

Thing is we're almost mad not to throw in some good pistons for <$500 but then may as well forge it properly with rods and you at around 900 for forged internals, which really is cheap. Then an eagle stroker crank is only 800 more again. Where do you stop.

So if i was to do a forged build id want to stroke it as you can then spool a60-62mm turbo like it's nothing, i.e gt35, hx40, 6262 ect... then it escalates even more, as you have a torque monster :D that hates drive lines.... I can see this path being an easy 8-10K doing it all yourself , spending a minimum 3500 on motor, 1500 gearbox and 2.5k in turbo setup, and that's before you go an lsd and twin plate and big intake manifold to match.

I drove a stock ve ss 6L the other day and it didn't really have much top end, made me realize how much i enjoy my car how it is already, so maybe i should not go down that path to +300w kw nirvana, i don't want to fight with gearbox's eating 3rd and 4th gear on top of the basic 4 spider and double syncro 2nd build i'm about to do anyway.

cheers zark, havin a troll thru now

its true shane, but so many spares its more of a question, why not use em ya know

Yea mate^^, i know what ya mean, my plans have changed as much as melbs weather,
to start i was gunna build a stroker for gsr, so i brought all these parts
JE pistons, Carillo Rods, Billet crank, Ferrera o/s valves, guides etc, bearings, a set of I beams, Bearings, arp studs, kelford cams an gears, the list goes on,
now though, ill probly wait for the evo V to blow somthing an then ill stroke that

but then i still have spare rods cams an gears, an heaps of other stuff plus a e2 block an loom so i kinda figure use whats there but i wanna avoid forgies due to the fact imo theyr not the best for daily grinds an work hacks
i really enjoy the fact that most of the cars in my area are v8's (nuthin wrong with V8's except the poor mentality of most owners) an that the little gsr with 160-170kw max is demolishing them, i figure build the Evo V up with the stroker an have a w/e monster an use the excess parts for a responsive cheaper build on the gsr

cheers for the thoughts fellas,

unfortunatley vr4 and evo have different size gudgeon pins so they wont match up.
vr4 rods are pretty beefy compared to evo ones.
with decent rod bolts they should hold a bit of power, then get some forgies.

Jamie,

If you're on a budget and keeping it daily, just drop in a stock '63t as Shane mentioned.

Use the cash on new gaskets / filters / reco'd components (eg CV joints, etc), get new bushes & engine mounts, upgrade to braded oil lines for the turbo.
Bsasically refurbish the engine with better components where feasible.
This will make it reliable, good daily, and not over-budget.

Then if you have the spare $$, get an exhaust, air filter with cold intake, and boost it to 15-18psi.

Stock & OEM is always the most reliable option.

EDIT: All that said, I know if I was doing that and could afford all the hektik bits like forged motor, bigger turbo, etc... man i would do that fo sho!
